Christmas is here! Let's property enter the spirit!
I have 2 amazing news:
- The first isn't exactly new - There's a new book on the Pentaho portfolio: Pentaho 5.0 Reporting by Example: Beginner’s Guide, from Mariano García Mattío and Dario R. Bernabeu. I didn't yet had the chance to review (maybe in 2024, when I actually have the chance to breath) it but from the feedback I had and reviews I read, it's an absolute no brainer - go get it!
- Mariano and Dario are organizing a book giveaway! Here's their message and instructions on how to get it!
Message from Mariano and Dario:
Sorcery, Reporting and Giveaways
Recently, when dictating a Pentaho course, we were asked what were the skills a developer should possess in order to specialize in the world of Open source Business Intelligence. We will now resume this question and share our observations with you, hoping to learn what your thoughts are on the matter.
We believe it is very important to have knowledge about infrastructure, databases, programming, multidimensional modelling, data integration, component development, data transfer protocols and security, among others. What we are trying to say is that it is not enough to have theoretical/practical knowledge about Data Warehousing, then learning a certain OSBI tool and call it a day.
If we go back to the 80's decade and perform an analogy with the characters of Dungeons & Dragons, we could say that a strong OSBI developer should be able to conjure spells, shoot arrows, forge swords, be strong enough to manipulate viking weapons while also being able to carry light armour, and also be agile and elusive sometimes while being brave and decided some other times. With this introduction we honour the tales of fairies, gnomes and unicorns to which Thomas Morgner has us accustomed in his blog and present to this mythical community a book of potions and enchantments to perform advanced reporting with Pentaho Report Designer 5.0, which we are hopeful will prove really helpful in the development of a solid foundation to grow your OSBI skills on.
Taking advantage of the occasion, we will be giving away a few copies of our new book: Pentaho 5.0 Reporting by Example; all you need to do is take a look at the book's description and then leave a comment on the interview we have given at Dataprix.
So, what do you think are the skills a developer should posess in order to master the OSBI world?
Hey ho! let's go hacking!
