There's been a few questions around the release of Pentaho 5.0 CE, so I thought I'd put an update.
Pentaho 5.0 EE is going to be released mid-September (stay tuned for more details on this!). Pentaho 5.0 CE is going to be released approximately 1 month after, so mid-October.
The CE is not going to be released later for strategic reasons; to be honest, it's because it's not ready. The Sugar branch (codename for 5.0) has been under development for years, has been a huge effort, and it's only natural that the company focuses more on the Enterprise Edition.
But since it's actually my job now as head of Community of Pentaho to make sure that we can work differently, I already started the discussions around what needs to happen so that we can trim down the time difference between the 2 releases - ideally releasing them at the same time. This impacts a lot of areas from engineering all the way to the build team, so it takes time to operationalize.
Back to the CE release, you can follow here the work that needs to be done: http://jira.pentaho.com/browse/BISERVER-10031. There are basically 3 main issues I'm putting as blockers for 5.0 CE:
- Change the Home perspective to something tailored for a CE release
- Getting the marketplace done
- Porting CDE to 5.0
Only now we are able to get resources to actually work on all this. One month delay is actual pretty optimistic, considering the fact that we still need a bunch of time to trigger the build process and get it uploaded somewhere.
Ideally - would love to be able to release, at least a preview version, during the Pentaho Community Meetup in Portugal, October 4-6. (Did I say it's going to be awesome? :) )
